ASUS VivoTab Smart ME400C-C1-BK 10.1-Inch 64GB Tablet (Black)

ASUS VivoTab Smart ME400C-C1-BK 10.1-Inch 64GB Tablet (Black)

Asus, known for its creative designs and outre hardware (such as the recent Taichi dual-screen laptop), has its own unique take on the Atom-powered Windows 8 tablet. The VivoTab Smart ME400 -- if you can decypher Asus' naming conventions, more power to you -- is a 10.1-inch touch-screen slate bundled with a fully separate keyboard/touch pad and an origami-like magnetic cover.
It's that folding cover and the keyboard that help the VivoTab (to pick one of the system's three names as shorthand) stand out from a crowd that also includes the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 and the Dell Latitude 10. All of these systems start with the same core specs -- an Intel Atom CPU, 2GB of RAM, and a small 64GB SSD, and all are between $500 and $600 for the base tablet (this model also includes a NFC chip for communicating with select phones and other devices). Adding the keyboard and cover is an extra $130, making the entire package just under $650, which is a bit less than similarly configured Dell, Lenovo, or HP Atom tablets with similar accessory packages.
With micro-style ports for USB and SD card connections, using any of these Windows 8 tablets can be hassle at times, although apps optimized for the slower Atom processor, including IE10, Netflix, and the Windows 8 UI itself feel snappy and much more usable than old Atom netbooks did.

Customer Questions & Answers

Answer:
If you buy this it will NOT come with a keyboard. The keyboard is the Asus vivo transleeve and will need to be purchased separately. But what it does come with is microsoft office so you can install it without having to buy the office program. When you buy the transleeve it will include the flap that the keyboard stick… see more

Answer:
Like the others, I'm not sure either. I posed that question to an Asus rep on a chat session and he said they were identical, including the bundled Office. I bought a C2 version to test for compatibility with some online content, then bought quite a few more for our college after the tablet passed the test. The othe… see more

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally. A 10" Tablet for the rest of us., January 14, 2013
By
This review is from: ASUS VivoTab Smart ME400C-C1-BK 10.1-Inch 64GB Tablet (Black) (Personal Computers)
As potent as the iPad and its App store are, and as fabulous as Android Tablets have become, I still could not pull the trigger on either one.
I really, really, wanted a Windows 7/8 environment on a Tablet.

Thankfully the wait is finally over, but are we getting everything we wanted with this one?

Bottom line first:
This Asus is by far the best value 10" Windows Tablet in the market now and for sometime to come judging from the price tags of similarly equipped Win8 Tablets by HP, DELL, Lenovo, MS and others.

For detailed specs and more, Asus has a nice web page for this model. Just Google "eee asus vivotab-smart"

Hardware:
The 10.1" feels surprisingly light in your hands at 1.16lbs/580gr. By comparison, the iPad retina is ~3oz heavier at 652gr. The Plastic back is sturdy with no flex and feels good to the touch.

The screen is bright and sharp. I found that I keep the brightness level on the lower end of the scale... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars A Stable and Affordable Windows 8 Tablet, February 1, 2013
This review is from: ASUS VivoTab Smart ME400C-C1-BK 10.1-Inch 64GB Tablet (Black) (Personal Computers)
Pros:
Battery Life
Display Size
Processor
NFC
Micro HDMI
Micro USB
Weight (580 Grams)
Full windows 8
Build quality
64 Gb emmc

Cons:
Speaker volume could have been higher, but its still acceptable based on the compact form factor.
Full USB port would have been better but not a deal breaker

I initially got an Acer Iconia W510 and was fed up of the constant crashing/driver issues with the device and returned it.

1. Build Quality
Checked this tab in while surfing for windows 8 tablets and i liked its build quality and features that are mentioned in pro's list here (Acer tablet had a lot of flex on the back plastic cover). As expected the tab feels really sturdy with no signs of flex no matter how you hold it.

2. Battery Life
The battery life of tablet is great, i can go through full day (approx. 9 hrs of usage) without any problems. My use involves web surfing, videos, music,... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Tablet --- Now I can get rid of my Desktop computer!, February 6, 2013

This review is from: ASUS VivoTab Smart ME400C-C1-BK 10.1-Inch 64GB Tablet (Black) (Personal Computers)
Absolutely a life changing device for me. I have to give up my office with the arrival of a baby boy. I fretted about this as I love my study but I really like my desktop computer in the study.

My wise wife suggested I use one of our existing notebooks instead --- a no go for me. If I am sitting at a desk then I don't want to be on a laptop conversely for mobile use I am not a fan of notebooks due to the weight and battery life.

I went to the Microsoft Store after watch all the microsoft commercials. I was hesitant as I had previously updated my desktop home computer to Windows 8 and what a hassle as I had to learn something new and different. I really liked the Windows Surface at the MS Store though --- Windows 8 was truly made for a tablet but the Surface ran Windows RT and if I lose my desktop then I would not be able to use my Windows programs (Quicken, etc)with the Surface. The Microsoft Rep told me that the Surface Pro was on the way but would weigh 2lbs... Read more
